I spoke not long ago about the change in our lives due to COVID. And, I also said that something that had not changed was the ugliness of racism.
Sadly, what some of us don’t see, is the everyday injustices that so many endure and suffer quietly. And, unlike a virus, we cannot produce a vaccine for this - but our actions can and will make a difference.
And so, I’d like to tell you a little about the difference we’re trying to make.
Our efforts to promote equitable opportunity and mutual respect for everyone have been underway for many years. And, in late 2019 we formalized this effort known as “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” or DEI, added this initiative to our 2020 Strategic Plan, and formalized a Steering Committee to ensure we were actively integrating DEI into all our initiatives and everyday work.
Right now, as I speak, our DEI Steering Committee is focused on holding organization-wide working groups to develop a guiding DEI mission statement, and develop programs and activities. These involve people from all parts of the Credit Union.
To keep you informed on this front, we’ve set up a webpage you can visit by going to figfcu.org/diversity-equity-and-inclusion. And, if you haven’t seen this already, be sure to check out the video our senior management team made to express our thoughts and commitment to positive change. You will also find that the webpage is regularly updated with insightful articles and resources to better understand the challenges we face, and the opportunities we have to make a difference.
Stay healthy and safe, and know that we are here to support our Credit Union family in any way we can.
